We hear so much about these two words: SELF. CARE. They have become buzz words on social media and catch phrases like #selfcaresunday are at the tip of everyone's tongue. As a therapist, I am glad about this trend where people are taking notice how important it is to take care of yourself with busy of work and family lives... however indulging in self-care isn’t always about bubble baths and Netflix binge days. Self-care also involves getting your life together, and doing things that you may not want to do, but are necessary for you to live your best life! Self-care sometimes is doing things that make others uneasy, but are essential for YOU!


We typically look at self-care in 5 areas of your life (not in any particular order): emotional, mental/intellectual, physical, spiritual, and social. For most people self-care comes easier in come of those areas than in others. Every once in a while, it's a good idea to check in with yourself and see if any of those areas need a little upgrade in the self-care department. 


Here are five ways to practice self-care that you may not have seen so mainstream, but are all great ways to kick off your own self care practice!


  1. Setting Boundaries (social self-care)-Often times this is so hard to do with co-workers, family and friends. We have routines in place, unspoken rules and norms that sometimes lead us into doing things we don’t want to do. SAY NO! Set a boundary by being clear on some things you don’t want to do. It may be hard at first, but you will thank yourself in the long run. If doing something makes you miserable, practice saying no, or “let me think about it”. Once you get the hang of it, you will find that boundary setting is liberating. 

  2. De-Cluttering Your Space (mental/intellectual and physical self-care):That closet, spare bedroom or garage that you throw EVERYTHING in... Carve out an hour or three to de-clutter your space. Throw things away. Start a Goodwill box and shred papers that are no longer needed. Hopefully, you will feel accomplished, and can breathe a little easier once that space is cleared. Get a candle while you are cleaning as well... it will bless you!

  3. Start an Exercise Routine/Fitness Class (physical self-care):I know, it was your New Year’s resolution... but it’s not too late! There are so many fitness classes all around, and with apps like ClassPass, you can find a class that meets your needs, budget and schedule! If you aren’t ready to commit the cash for exercise, get out and walk, or find some good workout videos and get it in at home!

  4. Let Go of a Toxic Relationship (social self-care): Whew chile. It seems like those toxic relationships are the ones we want to hold on to the most! Part of self-care is discovering that you are worth more than what some are willing to give you. So... Let’s make this short and sweet: Cut them off. Some people need hard boundaries to really leave you alone P.S. No one is saying you have to let them all go at once OR that everyone necessarily has toxic relationships in their lives to begin with. Maybe we'll talk about that another time ;) 

  5. Create and Follow a Budget, With a Goal in Mind (mental/intellectual self-care): (Extra credit for seeing a financial planner)- Self Care doesn’t always have to be about buying things to make you happy, even though marketing will have you believe that! Creating a budget and sticking to it can help you avoid a lot of unnecessary clutter, and save money on food and clothes. Saving money can help you cook more (or learn to cook), or help you really audit your closet instead of buying clothes all of the time…and who doesn’t want to save a coin! Practice self-care by securing and protecting your bag!


All of these things can help you increase your quality of life. Practicing self-care on a regular basis can be challenging, especially knowing where to start, but don’t worry!
